when i was five years old
we lived in a small town
a place where you could run around town
even at five
and go the drug store
or ride your bikes in the middle of the street
alot of the roads were made of brick
god only knows how long that took to make
i was born in 1976
the bicentennial of this country
alot of people celebrated from what i am told
fireworks and parades
all that celebratory nonsense
small towns
small places
i miss that
i barely remember it
being called in for dinner
from my mom shouting from the front porch
it seems like i could hear her for miles.
why does that seem far more amazing to me
than cell phones
than cable television
than this keyboard i type on.
