when i was your age...

taste has a way of making your day
or ruining your memory
i can have it all
and shame it at the same time
i used to think so many big thoughts
about the way things were

when i was a child
i fell too many times
to ever trust the hand that feeds me
when i was a child
i was held too much
so i never wanted to go without

my tastes are ranging with the years
i'm becoming something
i don't know yet for sure
when i was a child i preyed on small animals
killing and hurting them
because i knew their plight was meaningless
when i was a child i prayed small thoughts
destroying any hope
because i knew i was made to die

i was eight when i first drank from that water fountain
when my son went to school i drank from that very same fountain
it tasted bitter
like my father's hand across my face
my mother's insidious laughter
my tastes' have folded
they have collapsed on each other
i am everyone i ever met now
i taste too much.
i can taste it all now.
