A broken leg, a broken memory
Shoe shines and seventeen
My father cutting the grass,
Holding onto me
As I sat in his lap.
Falling out of his hands
From the up-hill lawn ride
Into the rock garden and stones
My mother running from the porch swing
So pretty in her heels and yellow sundress
I was weeping for safety
In a mother
In a someone to hold me warmer
And now I hold her hand
In this operation room
Knowing she needs me to hold her
Safe and sound
Like she did when i was only three.
